An Article I Wrote on Medium Went Viral, Here’s How Much I Earned From It

Honestly, when I started writing on Medium I didn’t think anything would come from it. But, when one of my first articles I posted started to get thousands of views, I thought again.

To be honest, I stumbled upon Medium on accident. I wasn’t looking for an extra place to make money. It was during quarantine and I was bored. So, like many bored people do I turned to the internet. Writing was something I was always passionate about and when I was younger, I wanted to be a writer. But years had passed and I moved on from that dream. But, when I found Medium, I decided to give it a shot again. After all, I had life experiences I could share and advice to give. I figured that if even only a couple of people read my articles maybe I could help them in some way. So, I started posting tips on weight loss, job hunting and side hustles. I didn’t think much of it until one day I got an email from Medium with my article stats……

I was completely shocked with that first email. Only a month in and one of my articles had over 1,500 views. To me it was crazy. For that 1,500 views, I ended up getting around $50. I decided to write a few more articles and just let my account grow from there.

It’s now been a year and some of my stories only have a few thousand views. But, that one story really took off. 1 year later and I have gotten around 50,000 views. I know for some people that might not seem like a lot. But for me, it’s huge. A friend even say my article featured on the Medium homepage under popular articles on Medium and sent me a screenshot! I was shocked and thrilled at the same time. But how much did I earn? Not as much as you would think. I ended up with about $1,500. Overall, this is pretty good but for some reason it wasn’t what I expected. But, since I didn’t even expect to make money at all, I’m happy with what I got. Plus, seeing that number motivated me to keep writing and sharing my stories with others.
